HONOLULU, HI (October 9th, 2024) – Hawaiian Host Group (HHG), the world’s largest branded macadamia company and parent company of Hawaiian Host, Mauna Loa, MacFarms, and KOHO, announced the completion of a $12 million renovation of its Honolulu manufacturing facility. This transformative project will help expand production capacity to keep up with demand and create new higher-paying jobs.
Have you ever wondered where the famous AlohaMacs are made? You might be surprised to learn that Hawaiian Host operates a chocolate making factory of over 100,000 square feet, right here in Honolulu. As the previous production line was installed in 1997, the factory was due for a major upgrade. At the heart of the renovation is the installation of state-of-the-art machinery, boosting production capacity from 880 to 1,500 pieces of chocolate per minute.
“This expansion is about more than just boosting production. It’s about preserving local jobs, creating new, higher-earning positions, and continuing to manufacture our beloved products right here in Hawai‘i,” said Ed Schultz, President & CEO of Hawaiian Host Group.
Workforce development is a key focus of the renovation. With Hawai‘i facing ongoing challenges in finding manufacturing workers, HHG’s new machinery will work as a “cobot system” that allows the staff to collaborate with the machines to almost double the output. The upgrades will alleviate high workloads, staff shortages, and provide greater flexibility.
“We’re integrating the latest technologies, not only to meet demand but to set a new standard in local manufacturing,” said Chris Rabago, Senior Director of Manufacturing & Engineering at HHG. “This project represents a significant investment in our team members and our community.” HHG wants to nurture local talent through a partnership with the University of Hawai‘i at Manoa, engaging students in engineering programs, and offering pathways to STEM careers on the Islands.
As one of the few remaining large-scale manufacturers still operating in the state – with additional facilities in Hilo (Kea‘au) and Kona (Kapua Orchards) – HHG’s facility expansion is vital to advancing Hawai‘i’s goal of diversifying the economy. While the company’s global footprint continues to grow, HHG remains deeply committed to ensuring that Hawai‘i’s future flourishes.
